The Route: Flat Highway, Then Real Mountain Road

The first 250-odd km to Chandigarh run on NH44, a fast, wide highway with minimal elevation change β€” this section typically takes 4–4.5 hours. From Chandigarh, NH5 climbs steadily through Kalka, Parwanoo, Solan and Kandaghat, gaining almost 2,000 m in elevation over the final ~90 km.

This mountain stretch is where nearly all the drive's remaining time goes β€” figure 2.5–3 hours for it alone, even though it covers a fraction of the total distance. The road is well-maintained but genuinely winding, so build in extra time rather than estimating purely by distance.

Best Time to Travel

March to June offers the most comfortable driving conditions β€” clear roads, pleasant temperatures, and blooming valleys on the final stretch. September to November brings the clearest mountain visibility of the year, if slightly cooler.

December to February can bring snow to the upper stretches around Solan and Shimla itself β€” beautiful, but it requires a driver experienced with snow/ice conditions and realistic time buffers, since road speeds drop significantly.

Scenic Stops Worth the Detour

Pinjore Gardens, just past Chandigarh, is a pleasant short stop if you want to stretch your legs before the mountain climb begins. Kasauli, a short detour off the main Shimla road, is a quieter, less-visited hill town worth considering if you have an extra half-day.

Solan, roughly an hour before Shimla, is a good final food-and-fuel stop β€” it's also known locally for mushroom cultivation and makes for an easy last break before the final climb into Shimla.

Mountain Road Safety Tips

Stick to daylight hours for the mountain stretch if it's your first time on this route β€” hairpin bends are manageable in daylight but considerably harder to judge after dark. Keep your cab driver informed if anyone in the group is prone to motion sickness; frequent short breaks help far more than pushing through.

In winter, ask specifically for a driver experienced with hill-road snow conditions, and build at least an extra hour into your schedule beyond the standard estimate.
