The Route from Delhi
Delhi to Haridwar runs about 214 km via Meerut and Roorkee on a mostly flat, well-maintained road, taking 4β5 hours by cab. From Haridwar, Rishikesh is a further 25 km / 30β40 minutes up the same Ganga-side road β an easy add-on rather than a separate trip.
A Sensible 2-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Leave Delhi early, reach Haridwar by early afternoon, check in, and spend the evening at Har Ki Pauri for the Ganga Aarti β arrive by 5:30β6 PM to get a good spot before the ceremony begins.
Day 2: Morning in Haridwar (Mansa Devi or Chandi Devi temple via cable car), then move to Rishikesh by late morning. Spend the afternoon at Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula, and catch the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan before heading back toward Delhi or staying a further night if time allows.
Practical Notes for a Pilgrimage Trip
Both cities are officially vegetarian and alcohol-free within municipal limits β plan meals accordingly. Modest clothing is expected and appreciated at all ghats and temples.
If you're interested in rafting, note that Rishikesh's rafting season generally runs SeptemberβJune, pausing during the heaviest monsoon months when the Ganga's water level rises significantly.
