Shimla is Himachal Pradesh's capital and the Himalayas' most famous colonial-era hill station, spread along a forested ridge at over 2,200 m. Mall Road, The Ridge, and a cluster of Raj-era buildings sit at its centre, with the toy-train run up from Kalka ranking among India's most scenic short rail journeys.

๐Ÿ“œ History & Heritage

The Story of Shimla

Shimla was little more than a forested ridge dotted with a few villages when British surveying parties first noted its cool climate in the early 1800s. A British political agent built the area's first permanent structure in 1822, and the East India Company formally acquired the site soon after, drawn by summer temperatures far gentler than the plains.

By 1864, the Viceroy of India had designated Shimla the official summer capital of British India โ€” for roughly six months a year, the entire colonial government, from the Viceroy's council to key departments, would relocate here from Calcutta (and later Delhi). Grand estates, Anglican churches, a mock-Tudor Gaiety Theatre and the Viceregal Lodge (now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study) date from this era, giving Shimla's Ridge and Mall Road their distinctly European character.

The narrow-gauge Kalkaโ€“Shimla Railway, completed in 1903 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built to connect the summer capital to the plains rail network year-round. After Independence, Shimla briefly served as the capital of undivided Punjab before becoming Himachal Pradesh's state capital in 1971 โ€” a role it still holds today, alongside its enduring popularity as a hill-station getaway.
