Perched on a ridge above Dehradun at just over 2,000 m, Mussoorie earned the nickname "Queen of the Hills" for its sweeping views over the Doon Valley on one side and the snow-capped Himalayan range on the other. Mall Road, cable-car rides and a scatter of waterfalls make it one of North India's easiest short hill breaks.
The Story of Mussoorie
Mussoorie's modern history begins in 1827, when a British army officer, Captain Young, built the hill's first permanent house and began developing it as a retreat from the heat of the plains below in Dehradun. Within a couple of decades it had grown into one of North India's most fashionable colonial hill stations, complete with a brewery, schools and a busy social season.
Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mussoorie became a favoured retreat for British officials, writers and, later, exiled royalty β the Dalai Lama himself briefly stayed here in 1959 before settling in nearby Dharamshala. The town's Mall Road, Landour cantonment and stone-and-timber cottages still carry that Raj-era layout and character.
After Independence, Mussoorie retained its status as a premier hill retreat and became closely linked with the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Landour, which trains India's civil servants. Today it remains one of the most easily reached hill stations from Delhi, popular for short weekend escapes as much as longer holidays.
