Darjeeling, in the eastern Himalayan foothills of West Bengal, was developed by the British in the 1830s-40s as both a hill sanatorium and a pioneering tea-growing region. Its UNESCO-listed toy train, terraced tea estates and sunrise views of Kanchenjunga make it one of East India's most iconic hill destinations.
The Story of Darjeeling
Darjeeling was originally part of the Kingdom of Sikkim before being ceded to the British East India Company in 1835, following a treaty with the Chogyal (ruler) of Sikkim who granted the sparsely populated hill tract in exchange for an annual payment. British officials, notably Dr. Archibald Campbell, quickly recognised its potential as a hill sanatorium β a cool-climate retreat from the plains β and began developing the settlement in the 1840s.
It was Campbell who also pioneered Darjeeling's tea industry, experimenting with Chinese tea plants in the hill's climate and soil in the 1840s-50s; the results proved so successful that Darjeeling tea, prized for its distinctive muscatel flavour, became one of the most sought-after teas in the world and is today protected by its own Geographical Indication tag.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a narrow-gauge "toy train" completed in 1881 to connect the hill station to the plains railhead at Siliguri, was engineered with looping switchbacks to climb the steep terrain and remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site β one of very few working mountain railways to hold that status. Darjeeling became part of independent India's West Bengal state after 1947, and remains one of the best-known hill stations in the eastern Himalayas.
