The Route into the Western Ghats

From Kochi, the route runs through Aluva, Neriamangalam and Adimali before climbing into the Western Ghats toward Munnar. The last 30-40 km is where the drive turns genuinely spectacular, as the road winds through tea estates with the Kannan Devan hills rising on either side.

Total drive time is around 3.5–4 hours, with the final climbing stretch taking noticeably longer per kilometre than the flatter early section out of Kochi.

Worthwhile Stops

Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, both directly on the route, are easy 10-15 minute stops that most drivers know well. Spice plantations around Neriamangalam offer short guided walks through cardamom, pepper and coffee β€” a nice way to break up the drive if you haven't done a spice-garden visit elsewhere in Kerala.

Once in Munnar itself, the Kannan Devan Hills tea estates, Mattupetty Dam, and Eravikulam National Park (home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr) are the main draws, all within a short drive of the town centre.

Best Time to Visit

September to March offers the most comfortable weather for both the drive and sightseeing, with clear skies and cool but manageable temperatures. Monsoon (June–August) brings dramatic, lush greenery and fuller waterfalls, but the hill roads need more careful, unhurried driving.
